What are you doing?

I’ve had a busy day. I hadn’t played my flute much since I had been up to Newcastle so I spent about an hour today on scales. Do you love your scales yet? The secret is to learn them all and then you can really enjoy playing them and discovering how you can improve your playing with them. What I noticed today was how uneven my fingers are after a good few days of not practising. Tomorrow might be better.

I’ve also managed to get out all the information packs out for our August course. I’m thrilled that we’ve got loads of new people coming. This weekend the flute choir are meeting at Ovingdean and on Sunday it’s an open Flutewise day for anyone who wants to come. Gareth McLearnon is going to be leading the activities. If you want to come let me know and I’ll send you full details. It should be fun. James Cairns and Pat Daniels are coming to help out.

I’ve also had to clear out my office today because it’s having a new window tomorrow. Can’t wait!

So what are you doing?

    Hi Liz,
Lovely to have you back safe and sound! Yes I agree with uneven fingers. Playing some very technical pieces at the moment and it is rather scary what can happen when one doesn’t practise. Thank goodness for scales.

Looking forward to another exciting, jam packed weekend with the flute choir and lots of playing!!! Have a great day tomorrow and see you Saturday.

    Love

I’m practicing my pic (which I hate, I think they should all be burnt before they leave the factory) for a concert later this week.
Does anyone practice every day on theirs or just when theyre asked to play???
I’m having to work very hard – nasty at the end of term!!

I’ve had three days induction at my new school as in Leicestershire we have to change again at 14. The new school has over 2000 people in four years, my intake is about 600, 24 tutors. Huge! But it does mean they have a really good orchestra (that I doubt I’ll ever get in to) and a flute choir, besides other things. I also have gone out of catchment so am the only one from my school, and have only reconised 4 people so far. Oh well.

I quite like playing piccolo, but my piccolo isn’t very good. I really should practice every day I know but I only tend to when I have music that needs playing. I’m busy with audition pieces at the moment as I have an audition on Monday. I’ve just done an exam so most sensible people would use those pieces – but I detest playing exam pieces after an exam so have dicided to work on new (and unfortunatley hard) ones. (It’s not that I mind a challenge. I love a challenge, it’s just a time factor.)

I also love scales. But find them easier on piano than flute, as I can visualise them. Is that just me – or is anyone else like that?

    Hi liz,
Thank goodness it’s friday!!! I’ve actually had a pretty good week . I had a week to get my playing back to scratch after my trip to France because on thursday I had to play a solo in my school’s summer concert. I played ‘Some of these days’ by Shelton Brooks because I won the Music competition with it this year ….I played it for my grade 7 too. It went quite well really and quite a few people came up to me at the end ,and at school today, and said that they thought it was good so I’m quite happy at the moment:):). I also played ‘Teddy bears Picnic’ with flute choir on the pic and I also played with orchestra as well.

I know what you mean about uneven fingers…..I find it helps to just look at my finger movements before playing to make sure that they’re all synchronised…..that way you know which ones are slow. I had that problem at the beginnning of the week.

thank goodness I break up next week!

    Love Lucy

    Hello

I’ve not been able to play my flute propely for the last few days as last Tuesday I went Ice Skating with school (We could go to Alton Towers, Stoke Waterworld or Blackburn Ice Rink -I’m not safe at any) so I was ice skating and I fell and bent my wrist back!

When I got home, Katie, my sister told me that my hand was swelling up, when my dad came in he said I was going to have to go to hospital so we went and i had an X-Ray. They don’t think I’ve broken anything but it’s badly sprained and I’ve not got to use it much and I have to keep a bandage on.

So at my flute lesson on Wednesday I did lots of Grade 6 Theory work to rest my wrist.

Unfortunatly I had to do the school summer concert on Thursday with a very sore wrist!

It’s better now but still not back to normal!

That was what my teacher said to me before my first ever flute exam – don’t do your wrist in the day before (it was because we were going on a school trip the day before).

I hope your wrist is properly better soon Thomas!

Oh and I had an audition today – and some how I managed to end up playing my piccolo too. The only touble was I had no piccolo music -so I was just told to play my flute music. The flute music was high anyway – so on the piccolo…
