TV! People!!

I’ve had a nice, busy, very social week, catching up with lots of friends. In between that I’ve been working on music for the website, Slovenia and my visit to Switzerland next week. I’m really excited about that. Any ideas why I might be off to Switzerland?

Yesterday, after I came back from shopping, I made myself a hot drink and flicked through the TV channels for a few minutes. I came across a progamme on Sky One called Are You Smarter than a 10 Year Old? Have you seen it? The part of the programme I came in at was when a very grown-up looking man was answering a question about music for a child aged 7. The question was – in which section of the orchestra would you find a piccolo? He didn’t know! He did say he might have heard of a piccolo, but that was it. I find it quite staggering that a person who has been through our education system to a higher level doesn’t have this level of general knowledge.
Is it me, do I expect too much?
Have we heard what happened to Rachel’s flute yet?

Well I recon that you are probably going to Switzerland to see James Galway – possibly for a master class.

And no you haven’t heared what happened to my flute yet, but I’m about to tell you.

It’s in a romote penisular of South Africa. It’s a birthday present for my mum’s cousin’s granddaughter, who I think will be 12 in May.

We asked the question, about how long is a piccolo? in a fundraising quiz at a wind band concert recently. Some of the answers were quite mad, especially as my friend was sat right in the front row playing guess what instrument?!!

    Hi everyone!
    Hope you are all ok..
Just thought I’d say that the latest issue of flutewise is really good!!! It covered quite alot of things that are proving very useful, particularly the warming up and auditions.

That was very kind of you, Rachel, to send your flute all the way to South America!

Liz- surely everyone gets taught what a piccolo is in and where you find it. I’m sure it’s part of the curriculum. Maybe some people just don’t pay enough attention in music lessons…

    Anyway, thanks for the magazine!

    Love Lucy x x x

When people ask me what I play I never say piccolo now – because nobody ever knows what it is.
