To Think About While I’m Away

I’m getting ready to leave to go to Newcastle for my Aunty Betty’s funeral. I’ve had a busy few days making sure all the things I need to do are done and ordering flowers and worrying about what to wear! (Why do we worry about what to wear?!). Everything is now ready so I’m off soon.

Many thanks to all of you who’ve left messages, I’m very grateful.

The photo above is of my lovely friend Erich Tucker from Dallas. Erich is great fun and the lucky people who are coming to our course in August are going to have a whale of a time with him.

So while I’m away can you post some comments about who or what you would like to see/do on courses? One of our best courses was with Matej Zupan, Ana and Blaz Pucihar from Slovenia. Do you want them back? Who else would you like?

Please talk nicely amongst yourselves.

OOO! They were fun! I liked them :D They didn’t know what rubbish bin meant :D Hehe, they were really nice, and great teachers!!

It would be great to see them again! I would LOVE to go on a course with Ian Clarke! That would be AMAZING!! I now have the Great Train Race, and its hard…

I have, however, converted my flute teacher to the wonders of Ian Clarke, and he rang up Just Flutes the other day and ordered ALL his music!! I think I might be stealing bits of it!!

Funerals are horrible, I hate seeing everyone so sad.

    Thinking of you,

Things have been VERY quiet on the comment front I wonder why!? I have lots of students doing exams next week, maybe you have one coming up too – maybe you are all practicing REALLY hard, I like to think so! Maybe the rain has dampened your spirits – hasn’t the weather been awful – another good reason to stay in and play your flute!

I had a lovely rehearsal with my quintet the other night. We are playing Quintette en Ut by Arrieu (some of you may be playing or have previously played his Sonatine) – it is a fun piece to play! It is great to play in a small group, very different from playing on your own or in a band or an orchestra. Why not get together with some friends and try some ensemble playing during the holidays.

I think messages are disapearing into cyberspace again… I’ve posted a couple and they haven’t appeared. Not to worry, try again!

I hope it isn’t too terrible for you Liz and that you hang on to the good times with Aunty Betty to get you through.

I want to try some Ian Clarke stuff. I remember hearing Alex playing Sunstreams on a course about a year ago. Can anyone recommend some good pieces? I’m grade 8 standard and I like a challenge!!

On a different note, does anyone else think it would be a good idea to have a mentoring scheme within Flutewise, where the older, more advanced members could mentor the younger beginners to give them someone to ask (who isn’t their teacher)about their veiws on nerves/scale practice/how they did this that and the other when they were younger. I’m sure both parties would learn fom it especially if older members were thinking of a career in flute teaching.

    Hi Liz!!!!
Back from France after a lovely choppy trip on the ferry…we had a great time interviewing people, shopping, trying new foods and doing MORE SHOPPING!!!!!

I’m really sorry about your Aunty Betty… I hope you are ok. Sorry I can’t make any Summer courses but I’m pretty busy all Summer and money is going elsewhere around the house, i’ve got dancing courses and I’m going away too. I’m sure you’ll have a good time!!

I really recommend inviting Matej Zupan, Ana and Blaz Pucihar again and i would love to see them at Abbotsholme again!! I also agree with Cathy about Ian clarke because he’s amazing and I’m sure everyone could learn a thing or two from him.

I hope the funeral goes ok.
    lots of love

I think Rachels mentoring idea is great. Or even using the blog to ask for tips on how to tackle bars that are tricky.
I’ve just ordered the Great train race so will be hasseling Cathy for tips. In fact, come on Cathy, which are the worse bars on page one?!!!

Hi Jack, I think the best music by Ian Clarke has to be Zoom Tube and it’s definately a challenge, you may of heard Stephen play it. Even so this piece can be interpreted in so many ways, I hope this helps you.

Thanks georgina, I’ll give it a go!!!
A lot of Ian Clarke’s stuff reminds me of Ian Anderson, all soty of airy and percussive – is that a word?!!

Haha, Jack every bar in the WHOLE PIECE is tricky!! My flute teacher can’t even play it yet! Did you see Chloe Whatsherface play it in the Urdd Eisteddfod? Wooow she was amazing!!

I’ve oonly had it a week, and it confusles me :S Teehee! But if I ever get anywhere with it I’ll give you tips! Haha!

Ooo! Had my piano Gr 5 exam the other day… Didn’t go too badly… apart from me knocking my music off the standy-bit! Tip to everyone – if a piece is going badly “accidently” knock your music off your stand and then start again! Genius!

    Byeeeee!!

Not a bad idea about knocking your music off the stand, but a bit evil!

I had a singing exam today:$ – boy was that scary. Especially the unaccompanied song, when it is just you and the examiner in the room and all the focus is on you. I had to look at the lampshade that was behind him, sorta above his head.

I don’t really have much of a clue about Ian Clarke’s music – I think I have along way to go before I get there. Still, if I remeber correctly he was at Project Flutewise:2 (in Leicester) – correct me if I’m wrong someone. Whoever it was was really cool – their eyebrows went up and down in time to the music!
