I’ve been teaching today. I do so very little of it now compared to the amount I used to do – 2 pupils instead of 100+! I don’t know how I ever managed it. Having 2 is very, very pleasant.
I’m really pleased with both of them, they work reasonably hard and they are both making good progress. One of them has just had a new flute, lucky girl. It’s beautiful. It has open holes and I’m so proud of her because she has got all the plugs out and her hand positiosn are really good. The plugs are the small plastic, or sometimes metal, rings that open hole flutes often come with. They block the holes so it is just like playing a closed holed flute. The plugs must affect the intonation, if only very slightly.
One of my pet hates is people playing with plugs in for months or years. Why bother with an open holed flute if you keep plugs in? If you can’t cover the holes properly after a couple of hours I would give up and get a covered hole flute. If you play with plugs in, leave a comment or send me an email and explain why.
Talking of pet hates, another of mine is cyclists on pavements. Why do people do this? It’s a much bigger sin than having plugs in your open holes. Do you have a pet hate?

A pet hate of mine is when there are people who play all music really really fast regardless of what tempo the music is marked. Especially when you have to sit next to them in an orchestra or band. I also really dislike it when people smoke around me as it smells foul.

My pet hates are silly really!
They are people eating incorrectly using a spoon like a shovel and chewing louding and the other one is ever since I started doing Latin at school (not all people do it, the rest do Spanish) I hate people using incorrect English so when someone in RE said “Miss, what’s that you’ve wrote?” I shouted out “WRITTEN!” and everyone turned around and gave me a funny look!
I get really pedantic when people do things that annoy me!
