It’s Summer

Well it is according to the date, but maybe not the weather. Sorry, I haven’t been blogging much. I’ve been working quite hard, getting ready for the BFS Convention, Abbotsholme and the next magazine – as well as all the other things in life I have to do.

The BFS Convention is in Manchester, 21 – 24 August. Flutewise will be having a stand which Mark (my son) & I will set up and then Abbie will run. It will have a big dish of sweeties on it – dreadful idea sucking a sticky sweet before going to try a few gold flutes!

I can’t stay for the convention as we’ve got a ‘family thing’ ie party, at the weekend. We’ve also got a ‘family thing’ ie party on Tuesday as it is our wedding anniversary. So I’ve lots of food and things to prepare. I’ve got a lovely cake coming tomorrow. If you know me really well you’ll know why “The Cake” is very important to me – and it’s nothing to do with eating it.

Abbotsholme is full to the brim – 45 course members. Of those, 17 are post grade 7 standard! That’s really impressive. I’m just about ready for it, just a tiny bit more work to do on Wednesday, although having said that, it will probably take me all day and most of the night.

I’m aware I still haven’t let you know about the amazing present Erich sent me, but I’ll sleep on it and try to post a photo soon. A few more clues – there’s one above. The present couldn’t go through the letter box as it is about as long as a flute and as wide as a flute case but the depth varies if it is pressed. It makes a good sleeping companion. The Purple Cow features on it. You’ll never guess ……. I’ll take it to Abbotsholme.

    Hi Liz!

I’m commenting all the way from Crete on a keyboard which is really hard to type on ! i have been trying to practice my flute in our apartment although there isn’t much space or anywhere good to put my music on! However, despite the heat, I’m still trying to do some practice where possible.

Anyway, I’m really looking forward to Abbotsholme (of course)and improving my playing before my exam.

Speaking of exams, does anyone have any tips on grade 8 aural?
    - I’ve been practicing it on the plane ( the none singing bits) but I still struggle with the one where you have to sing back the lower part- does anyone have any good advice on how I can improve on it?(i have the grade 8 tape already)I want to be more confident in that as it is probably the aural that lets me down the most.

Thanks, have a lovely summer! See some of you soon!

    Love Lucy x x x

hi Liz, I’m wondering if you’ve a purple cussion about the size of a flute case with a cow sewn on it!

I have just one peice of advice for you Lucy and that is to relax! It helps – i mean i was completely hyper when i went into my Grade 8 Flute exam (but that might have been because it was my birthday). But i’m with you on the Aural – it’s horrible but all i can say is listen hard – try and blank out the top part.

    Hope this helps,
    Ellie xex

    Hi Lucy,

I had aural classes before my grade 8, and the things we got taught for that is to :

1 the first time, move your hand up and down in relation to the pitch… it’ll help you remember where the tune goes.

2 The second time, sing it quietly along with the piano under your breath… this will make it a lot easier !

Hope this helps, and good luck!!!

Hi!!! I just thought I send a quick message to wish you all a great Abbotsholme, and I’m really sorry I can’t be there (I’ve been for the past 3 years). I’ve got to go back to school on Thursday (28th)and because it’s going to be my GCSE year (arghh!!!) my Mum doesn’t want me to miss any school. Which is fair seen as I did miss a fair bit last term with illness. (Though we didn’t know that was going to happen when she said no to it.)

Anyway make sure you all have loads of fun – I look forwards to seeing all the pictures in the magazine and on the blog. And if you’re not all having too much fun think of those of us stuck in RE (and other horrible things like that).

I’ll do double scales practice in your honour.

    Rachel :0)
