Some (brave) parents attended a special workshop to learn to play the fife with Abbie Burrows, Sandy Hay and Stephen Clark. They did really well, so well they were invited to perform on the Barbican foyer at 13.00. We should have provided them with certificates of achievement!

Mike Mower with Andy Panayi
After the debut performance of parents Mike Mower and Andy Panayi took the stage with pianist Neil Angilley.
There were even more workshops sessions going on in GSMD – James Penny held a session on his own compositions and then these were performed on the lower foyer. Lisa Nelsen gave a workshop masterclass using two pieces from Project:Flutewise Book 1, theye were Paradis: Sicilienne and Gaubert: Madrigal and there was als a Nose Flute Masterclass, lead by studentts of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Everyone got a free instrument to keep (well we wouldn’t want them back, would we?)

Nose flutes
Back on the Barbican foyer at 14.00 we had a performance by Gareth McLearnon with Tim Carey on piano. He played some of the pieces form his newly published book, ‘Round Ireland with a Flute’.

Lucy Noble meeting Tooty
Gareth was followed by Lucy Noble and her band. Their first concert was just over a year ago. Lucy would like to change people’s perception of classical music and classical instruments and show that they can be viewed in different ways and be more accessible to an audience. We heard some classical pieces that were played in a more contemporary way and some popular songs that were changed into instrumental versions.

Keith Waithe meeting Tooty
On the lower foyer Keith Waithe demonstrated his ethnic flutes and then the Pied Piper rehearsals began again.

Mike Mower and Paul Edmund Davies
Over in the GSMD people flocked to various workshops. Paul Edmund-Davies topic was ‘Wow! Film Music what’s that all about?’, Atarah held a question time session for parents and teachers; Kirsten Spratt’s workshop masterclass was on two pieces from Project:Flutewise Book 2, they were Romantic Song by McDowall and Donizetti’s Sonate.

Andy Findon and his Flute Cupboard
Andy Findon brought along his Flute Cupboard and was assisted by Pete Walton on guitar and James Turner on percussion and then there was The Wrong Concert. This was the brainchild of Abbie Burrows and everyone was entertained and educated how not to do things. The players included Paul Edmund Davies, Matej Zupan, Kirsten Spratt, Mike Mower, Gareth McLearnon, Lisa Nelsen, Tim Carey, Chris Baxter – if I’ve missed anyone, I hope Abbie will let me know.
