Flute players at Queens Park with Tooty

Flute players at Queens Park with Tooty

This is all we seem to be doing at the moment, having great fun doing Flutewise events. Yesterday Abbie, Gareth and I were at Queens Park Community School in London thanks to Joss Campbell and Brent Music Service. We met about 40 young flute players and had lots of fun. We worked very hard learning all the strange noises in Zig Zag Zoo, but I think the highlight of the event was when everyone met Tooty – they loved his hat!

Thanks to all the lovely young flute players who took part – I hope you will all become Flutewise members.

And for all of you folk who are a bit nosey – I went up to Gareth’s for lunch where we had soup, lovely bread and cheese, fabulous coffee and a cooky. Gareth drove me from his house in his very nice car with a seat warmer and we met Abbie at the station. After the event we had a delicious curry – I love them but get them very, very rarely.

If you were at the event (or even if you weren’t) don’t forget the Flutewise Competition.

Lucy Needs Help

Who can help her? Here is her request from the comment box in Flutewise Competition:

Sorry i haven’t left a post for ages; I’ve been quite busy with mocks and things.

I have been asked to play a concerto in about 11 months time at a
huge chorale concert in a cathedral and i was wondering if anyone has
any suggestions or recommendations as to what I should play as its got
to be pretty impressive as i’m the main soloist so I need something
grade8/diploma standard although I’m willing to learn something harder
if need be. I’ve already been thinking of Mozart, Rutter and vene Danzi
but I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions? My teacher reckons
that French pieces suit my tone the best and I really enjoy playing
them.

Thanks, love Lucy xxx

My suggestion – Chaminade Concertino

I’ve been away and now I’m back – but going away tomorrow again. Life is so busy.

I was in Suffolk on Friday for a funeral of my cousin, Val. She was wonderful and also has the most wonderful family. I know at least one of them reads this blog, so I hope you’ll all join me and send them our best wishes in the difficult days ahead.

On Saturday Stephen and I went first of all to Brentwood where we were faced with almost 30 of Carolyn Wheadon’s pupils. It was an historic occasion as we rehearsed Ian Clarke’s new piece, ‘Zig Zag Zoo’ for the very first time. It was great, but hard work! I think this piece will be played and played and played. We finished the morning with Stephen playing Ian Clarke’s Zoom Tube.

After we rehearsed in St George’s Church we crossed the road to Carolyn’s house where we had an amazing lunch. Carolyn’s husband, Toby had made this fabulous soup – Stephen said it was the BEST soup he had ever had! So thanks to Carolyn and Toby – and Carolyn and her pupils for making this event happen (they busked to raise the money for the hire of the building).

We then got into our cars, with sat navs on and proceeded to get very, very lost going to New Hall School in Chelmsford. (Stephen has discovered my liking for going around each roundabout 3 or 4 times!)

We eventually arrived to have a really great afternoon with another fabulous group of young players, mainly pupils of Chris Roe. After a warm up including some funny noises, we went on to learn another Ian Clarke piece, Walk Like This. Just to balance it we looked at Greensleeves, Canon of Peace and Hungarian Round. Before the paraents arrived to hear what we’d been up to we played Erich’s game – always popular. We played Walk Like This and Greensleeves to the parents and Stephen played Ian Clarke’s Zoom Tube for the second time that day. It always goes down well. Many thanks to Chris Roe and New Hall School for making this event happen.

After that we headed to the town to try and park and find a curry. Which we thoroughly enjoyed while we planned the next events!

If you attended one of these events don’t forget to enter the competition in the post below.

I’ve decided we need a competition. How would you like to win a CD of some lovely flute playing? Of course you would. Every month we’ll have a prize draw. To enter all you need to do is leave me a message in the comments box – just to say you’ve read this and would like to enter. You’ll need to leave at least your first name and some other way I can identify you eg ‘Fred from Basingstoke’ would do. The only other thing is this is only open to members.

At the end of the month I’ll put all the names in a hat and the first one out will win. You can enter more than once and, if you do, your name will go into the hat more than once.

I’m away now for a few days. I hope I come back to some entries!
