Something of interest

This looks really interesting if you are in travelling distance of London – a Woodwind Orchestra Playday in January 2008.  It is being run by Shea Lolin of the East London Clarinet Choir (it’s ok, us flute players are more than welcome). It would be good if a few of us could go. Have a look at www.elclarinetchoir.co.uk/playday and let me know if you are thinking of going.

My present revelation is on its way….

My Surprise 2

You clever people were quite right! The parcel was from Erich Tucker. This photo shows the back of the package with a lovely, specially composed piece, ‘Ode to Liz’, by the aforementioned Mr. Erich Tucker.

The big question is – what was inside the parcel? Any ideas?

My Surprise

I’m not feeling too good today, I’ve got a horrid bug that is making me cough and cough. I’ve also had quite a hard day doing the other thing I do in life – with badly behaved people. But when I got home I had the most lovely surprise – the postman is bag doing his rounds and he had delivered this exciting parcel for me – or ‘Queen Liz of the Goodwins’, so I assume that is me as there is no one else at this address called Liz.

Any ideas what was in it or who it is from?
More later …………

Another course coming up

I don’t seem to have posted much recently, sorry. I’ve been busy with planning for the course and trying to get grant applications completed.

I have been very impressed with the comments people leave – thank you all of you, it makes life interesting for all of us.
I’m really looking forward to our course at Ovingdean next week. We are starting with a 24 hour flute choir rehearsal and then we go into our weekend course. I’ve been sorting out music and trying to work out what we will play at the end of course concert. It is going to be in 2 parts. The first part will be in St Wulfren’s Church, which is beautiful but small and we can’t really get everyone in with music stands, so most of the music for that will be memorised. Then we’ll play some flute ensemble music, from music, back at Ovingdean Hall school.
I wonder what the new course members will think about having to memorise their music!
Keep leaving those comments.

Scales again – an idea

Thinking about how to improve scales I had an idea. This idea isn’t new, I’m sure I’ve thought of it before over the years of teaching and I’m sure many other teachers have also had it, but have we done much about it? In the days of all this new technology, it is getting easier and cheaper to do such things.

My idea – if someone is struggling to improve on a scale it is a really good idea to play a piece or study in that key – so why not have lots of simple, well-known tunes in the keys someone is trying to learn?
Someone I am teaching is trying to perfect E, E flat, A and A flat majors plus the relative minors – F, F#, C and C#. So I’ve transposed a few tunes into those keys – Bach’s Minuet, Sailors’ Hornpipe, Ode to Joy for the majors and Greensleeves for the minors. If you’d like to test them out, send me an email with your email address and I’ll send you the PDFs. You can email me via the website if you don’t have my email address. I ask two things of you – you must be a member of Flutewise and you must let me know if you improve if you use them.
But how can we check if you’ve improved? Over to you …..
Oh, yes, can you think of another well-known minor tune?
