Weekend Course

We’ve just had a very pleasant weekend at Ovingdean Hall in Brighton with Gareth McLearnon. That’s him in the photo. If you haven’t come across him before, he is from Belfast, a superb flute player and he’s the rep for Pearl flutes (which seem to be getting better all the time – could it be Gareth’s influence?)
Members of our flute choir came on Saturday and we were joined by some local teachers and young flute players on Sunday.  James Cairns came again to help (we all enjoy his enthusiasm and company), as well as Pat Daniels and Samantha.
We discovered that Gareth had amongst the eminent people he has had as teachers, Ian Clarke, We also discovered that even though Ian had been one of his teachers, Gareth had never played “Walk Like This”!! So the course members taught him!
On Sunday we had a talk about Grade exams as we were lucky enough to have Alison Travis visit us. She is a local flute teacher and she used to exam for Guildhall. It was good for everyone to get advice and ask questions.
At the end of the day we had a little concert – more about that in another post (because I haven’t worked out how to have more than one photo in a post – isn’t that sad?!)

What are you doing?

I’ve had a busy day. I hadn’t played my flute much since I had been up to Newcastle so I spent about an hour today on scales. Do you love your scales yet? The secret is to learn them all and then you can really enjoy playing them and discovering how you can improve your playing with them. What I noticed today was how uneven my fingers are after a good few days of not practising. Tomorrow might be better.

I’ve also managed to get out all the information packs out for our August course. I’m thrilled that we’ve got loads of new people coming. This weekend the flute choir are meeting at Ovingdean and on Sunday it’s an open Flutewise day for anyone who wants to come. Gareth McLearnon is going to be leading the activities. If you want to come let me know and I’ll send you full details. It should be fun. James Cairns and Pat Daniels are coming to help out.

I’ve also had to clear out my office today because it’s having a new window tomorrow. Can’t wait!

So what are you doing?

I’m back again

I’m back from my trip to Newcastle for my Aunty Betty’s funeral. Thank you all for your lovely messages.

You might be surprised when you read this, but I had a wonderful time. I’m incredibly sad my Aunty Betty is no longer here, but at the same time grateful for her wonderful life and knowing she is not suffering any more. She was a very special person and I lived with her for a long time when I was small and over the years she has always been there for me and the rest of the family. It was lovely to spend time with my cousins and last living Uncle and remember all the wonderful things about her life. It’s been a bit of a roller coaster of emotions, but on the whole the feeling is good.

I have a huge extended family. On my mother’s side there were 10 brothers and sisters and many of them had children, so I’ve lots of cousins. Aunty Betty was a pivotal force within the family, always there to pick up pieces in times of crisis and always to be relied upon when it was party time. Until she was about 78, last year, she looked after her 3 grandchildren every weekend. She was amazing.

I thought I’d share the photo above with you. It was taken on the night of the funeral. That’s me, with my cousin Billy, who was Aunty Betty’s middle son and his daughter, April. That’s his dog as well, Hiedi, she’s 8 months old and very friendly.

I have a question for you – if Billy is my cousin, what relationship is April to me? April and I have discussed it many times over the years but don’t know the answer, we’d like it to be something special.
