A concert at Corsica Hall around 2000

This is a view of the dining hall from the other direction than the one I posted yesterday. If you look closely, you’ll see Lauren, Alex, Mike, Vicki, Stephen and others – and another Mike. I received the most wonderful letter from him a couple of days ago. I’m sure he won’t mind me sharing it with you. I read the first paragraph and felt sad, then read on and felt …. well ……

“Dear Liz
I am writing to let you know that I will not be renewing my membership of Flutewise. I have moved away from the flute and no longer have lessons and thought that Flutewise just wasn’t for me anymore.
However I am also writing to thank you immensely for the years that I have been a member. The talented and passionate people I met have become some of my closest friends whilst the Residential courses were undoubtedly a highlight of each year. The memories that I have of those courses remain highlights of my life so far! Your dedication, limitless energy and general enthusiasm never ceased to amaze me and are what makes Flutewise such an incredible group to be part of, so thank you soooooooooo much for everything and good luck with future Flutewise events! I will miss you all at Flutewise a lot; so all my love and psycho rats to everyone, and thanks once again Liz!”

We’ll miss you Mike.

The Dining Room at Corsica Hall

If you ever came to one of our courses at Corsica Hall, you’ll remember the beautiful dining room. When we heard about the redevolpment we wondered how they would use this space. The building is Grade II listed, so that means few changes can be made. It is a huge space, with windows down each side and a very high ceiling.

I was delighted to find it is still there in all its glory. The ceiling has been mended and painted and the walls and floor cleaned and polished. It was thrilling to walk on the beautiful oak floor (I think it’s oak) again. Even the light fittings are still there.

It has been turned into a 2 bedroom flat. The bedrooms and 2 bathrooms are where the kitchen used to be. The only change to the hall is the addition of a kitchen. It looks very odd. Who will buy such a place? The hall will cost a fortune to heat and there is no focal point in the room. The cost? Offers over £500,000. When the whole building was up for sale the cost was just double that for the whole lot.

I’m really pleased the building is back in use. I hope the peolpe who live there enjoy it as much as we all did.

I forgot I could remind you about events on my blog.

On Sunday 29th April we’ve got a Flutewise Funday with Mike Mower the Girl Guide Headquarters in Petersfield. It’s aimed at flute players aged 8 to 19 and their teachers. The morning will be a workshop for advanced players and the afternoon is aimed at players of all standards. All Flutes Plus will be there with their travelling shop.

Places are still available, but pre-booking is essential. If you want to come, give me a ring on 01273 702367.

The door at Corsica Hall, Seaford

Yesterday I had a wander down memory lane. My husband and I were driving through Seaford and we decided to stop and have a look at Corsica Hall. I wrote about it recently. (March – Flutewise Reunion). It’s the place we used to hold residential courses and I had the mad idea to buy it once.

It has been converted into 26 apartments (after it was said there would be no planning permission given for residential development – interesting what can be achieved with enough money). The work is almost complete now and a few of the apartments have been sold. It’s good to see the place looking smarter, with lots of security features. We had a good look around the show flat which was part of the conference room. It’s very nice, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, nice kitchen, very spacious.

My burning question was …. what has happened to the dining room? As I can’t work out how to post 2 photos at once, you’ll have to wait until later to find out.

Croatia

Dear Everyone interested in coming to Croatia,

For many years now I have enjoyed teaching at a small summer school in Croatia. It is a beautiful country with wonderful people. It is an extremely safe place.

This year Sandy Hay will be coming with me to teach. The summer school takes place in a medieval castle in Kastel Luksic which is 10 minutes from Split airport, right on the coast.

I stay in an apartment at Villa Soulavy, which is a short walk from the castle. The website address is: http://villasoulavy.tripod.com/

If you would like to come the costs will be:
Course fee
Air fare
Accommodation
Food
Spending money

Course fee – about £50 – £55 (this can be paid on arrival). The flute course takes place in the morning and during the afternoon there is another course called ‘innovators’ – I’m not 100% sure what it is and I’ll try and find out more. The cost is about £15 if you are interested.

Air fare – my flight details are below. The airport you need to get to is Spilt, which is only 10 minutes away. A number of airlines fly to Split and as it is so near, it doesn’t matter if you choose to come a day or more later. The airlines include BA, easyjet, Croatia Airlines, Thomas Cook, Wizzair. You will need to book your own flight.

Accommodation – I recommend staying at the Villa Soulavy with me. If 3 or more of you are going it would be a good idea to share an apartment next to mine. The cost is:
for 2 people sharing 50 euros per night (25 euros per person)
for 3 people sharing 65 euros per night
for 4 people sharing 80 euros per night
I can book this for you and you can pay for it on arrival. This is the only thing I am concerned about – we need to book the accommodation very soon so it doesn’t get booked by other people.

Food – this is not expensive in Croatia. Breakfast – there is a lovely bakery about 20 yards from the villa or cereal, fruit, etc can be bought at the local supermarket (which is tiny!). Each apartment has a kitchen.
Lunch – usually provided at the course
Evening meal – this could be prepared in the apartment (! cooking!!!!) or there are plenty of restaurants around and meals cost from £5-£6. There are lots of fish dishes and pizzas and pastas. Ice creams cost about 50p.

Other spending money – there isn’t a great deal to buy in the way of souvenirs. I will arrange for us to go on a ferry trip to one of the islands one day (there are over 1000 islands off the coast). This will cost a maximum of £10 – I think it will be much less. We’ll also take a sight seeing trip to Split and Trogir – bus fares are under £2.

The villa is a few yards from the beach which has safe swimming. There are interesting walks to various castles along the coast. The young people all speak good English and many of the adults do. You don’t need any injections, but an E111 (or the new version whatever it is called is a good idea).

Any questions – ask!
